Here are a few reminders of the etiquette for online discussions:
- Treat each other with respect even when their opinions differ from yours;
- Avoid slang terms and texting abbreviations (“u” instead of “you”);
- Avoid using cap lock feature;
- Limit and possibly avoid the use of emoticons; not everyone knows how to interpret them;
- Be cautious when using humour or sarcasm as the tone is sometimes lost in an email or online discussion and your message might be taken literally or offensively;
- Make posts that are on-topic and within the scope of the course material;
- Take your post seriously and review and edit your post before sending it;
- Use clear and concise language; be respectful of others’ time and attention;
- Always give proper credit when referencing or quoting another source;
- Avoid short generic replies (“I agree”); you should include why you agree and add to the previous point; and
- Be open-minded as this is one of the major points of participating in online discussions.
